From the Village of Avon - “Rising up from the Ashes”
The Village of Avon, in response to a significant infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in its largest park, will be implementing two DEC Urban Forestry Grants. Between 700 and 800 ash trees have been removed in Avon's Driving Park due to this invasive species. There will be a public informational meeting conducted by the Village of Avon on Tuesday, March 26th at 6:30 PM at the historic Avon Inn. At this gathering Brice June, DEC Forester and Chris Luley Ph.D., President of Urban Forest Diagnostics will be presenting the background on the EAB, the DEC's Urban Forestry Program, the importance of a tree inventory and a tree management program and the benefits to the environment and the health of the community. The meeting will be hosted by the Avon Rotary Club. ·
The Village was awarded two grants from the DEC's Urban Forestry Program. One grant is a tree planting grant in the amount of $50,000 to plant 166 trees, with 30 different species, in April, as part of the rejuvenation of the Avon Driving Park. Some of these will be planted by community members on April 20th as part of an Arbor Day event. The second grant in the amount of $18,000 is for an inventory of the Village's street trees and the trees in the other village parks. Also included in this grant will be the creation of a management plan to protect and preserve our trees into the future. Dr. Luley will be conducting the inventory and developing the management plan for the Village. He along with Mr. June have been advising and consulting with the Village on this project. John Marks, Chair of the Village's Park Commission, stated "we are very grateful for the supportive and cooperative guidance and advice of NYS DEC foresters and their Urban Forestry Program. And without the DEC's and Dr. Luley's expert guidance we would not have been able to put together this comprehensive project."

Village
of Avon's Driving Park
The
Avon Driving Park which contains hundreds of ash trees has
been invaded by the emerald ash borer (EAB). This is an
invasive insect that attacks only ash trees. Most trees
die within 2 to 4 years of being infested. The Village with
the advice of DEC foresters have taken the proactive step
to dealing with this significant natural disaster by removing
the ash trees. The removal commenced in January. This will
be followed up with a planting program that will bring a
greater variety of tree species to this park. While this
insect will change the park for the near term; in the long
term the natural environment will be enhanced. If you have
any questions please call the Village Office at 226-8118.

Village
of Avon Awarded Urban & Community Forestry Grants
The Village of Avon has been awarded $68,500 through the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservations
(DEC) Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program. Funding
for this program comes from the Environmental Protection
Fund and is awarded only to qualifying government entities
or not-for-profit organizations.
The Village of
Avon worked in conjunction with Heather Grant, Livingston
County Grants & Public Information Coordinator, to complete
the successful applications. Successful projects must implement
tree inventory, community forest management planning, tree
planting or tree maintenance projects in NY State to create
healthy urban and community forests while enhancing the
life of the community residents.
John Marks, Chair of the Village of Avon Parks Commission,
stated, The Village of Avon and its Parks Commission
is extremely pleased that we have been awarded two DEC Urban
Forestry Grants. The first grant is for $50,000 to assist
with tree planting in Avons Driving Park (the Villages
largest park). The park had been devastated by an infestation
of the Emerald Ash Borer necessitating the removal of 700-800
ash trees over the past year and a half. This funding will
greatly assist us in bringing back the natural beauty of
the park and restoring the much needed environmental contributions
of trees.
The second grant
is for $18,500 to assist the Village in developing a tree
inventory and management plan that will provide the basis
for future care and maintenance of not only park trees but
those along the village streets as well.
